Your doctor called it a plumbing problem. The arteries have been filing a report for two years.

Cut From Steel

A sick, weak fifteen-year-old who swam Alcatraz at sixty.

Jack LaLanne was a sick kid. He was born in San Francisco in 1914, and by fifteen he lived on sugar and junk. The boy was underweight and weak, and he later called himself a sugarholic.

Jack's mother took him to hear a health lecturer named Paul Bragg in Oakland in 1929. Jack walked out of that hall and rebuilt his diet inside a week. He started training with weights at a time when most doctors called that dangerous. In 1936 he opened one of the first modern health clubs in America, in Oakland, and physicians of the day warned people to stay away from it.

LaLanne kept going for another sixty years. In 1974, at sixty years old, he swam from Alcatraz to Fisherman's Wharf while handcuffed, shackled, and towing a boat that weighed a thousand pounds. At seventy he towed seventy boats carrying seventy people a mile and a half across Long Beach Harbor, cuffed again. He died in 2011 at ninety-six.

You should notice what actually happened there. Jack was not born with any of it. He was handed a weak, sugar-fed body and a warning at fifteen, and he read that warning as instructions. The body you have is the one you have been building. Your signal arrived later than his. It arrived all the same.

The lie you were handed

You noticed it about a year ago. Something that used to be automatic started needing a running start. You blamed the long week. Then the long week turned into a long year.

I heard the same line you did. A doctor glances at the chart, sees your age, and tells you this happens to everybody. He writes a prescription and calls in the next patient. That man is not lying to you on purpose. He is answering a smaller question than the one you asked.

You did not walk in there asking for a pill. The question you brought was why the machine changed. An erection is a blood-flow event, and that is the whole secret of it. Healthy vessels do most of the work. Nerves carry the signal. Hormones set the thing in motion. When the vessels stiffen, the signal arrives at a closed road.

It's not age. It's these three.

You feel like this problem showed up overnight. I can tell you it took about ten years to build. Three systems drive it, and every one of them answers to what you do next.

01 / Your Vessels

Cleveland Clinic reports that vascular disease and diabetes may be responsible for as much as 50 to 70 percent of ED cases. The vessels feeding your penis are narrower than the ones feeding your heart, so they clog first and they complain first. Research suggests this symptom can appear two to four years ahead of a major cardiac event. Good doctors now read it as a warning light rather than a bedroom issue.

02 / Your Blood Sugar

You eat like the man you were at thirty. Bread in the morning, soda in the afternoon, beer at night… every one of those sends a spike through vessels that are already tired. High blood sugar may damage the lining of your arteries over years, and that lining is what tells a vessel to open. Diabetes sits near the top of every ED risk list Mayo Clinic publishes. A walk tonight can blunt tomorrow's spike.

03 / The Couch

I want you to notice what stopped here, because it was not the calendar. You quit moving, so your vessels quit training. A 2023 review in The Journal of Sexual Medicine pooled eleven randomized trials and found that regular aerobic exercise improved erectile-function scores, with the largest gains in the men who started out worst. Most of those programs ran 30 to 60 minutes, three to five days a week. That is a walk, a bike, or a rowing machine… not a marathon.

This is not a bedroom problem.
This is the earliest warning your heart can send.

Take it back today

You can start tonight, and none of it costs a dollar. Walk for twenty minutes after your largest meal. Get to bed an hour earlier, because your body does its hormone work while you sleep. Lift something heavy three times a week. Take the nightcap down to one, or down to none.

You should also book two things. Ask for blood work that covers total and free testosterone, fasting glucose or A1c, plus a lipid panel. Then ask your doctor to look at your heart instead of only your prescription. Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic both treat this symptom as a reason to check the cardiovascular system, so the request is a reasonable one to make.

You have been reading this as the end of something. A warning is not a verdict. It is a head start.

6 free habits that keep the blood moving:

/ Lift heavy 3x a week. Muscle is the message.
/ Protein at breakfast. Eggs, not a bagel.
/ 10 min morning light to set your sleep clock.

Earned it: 3 things you want

You didn't put in 45 years to settle for beige.

01 / Grill · Weber 22” Original Kettle Premium

George Stephen cut a sheet-metal buoy in half in 1952 and started selling it as George's Barbecue Kettle. That shape has barely changed in seventy years, because the man got it right the first time. The 22-inch Premium runs around $219 today, which is less than one dinner out for four. Nothing you cook indoors tastes like what comes off it.

02 / Motorcycle · Triumph Bonneville T120

Steve McQueen rode Triumphs hard, including the TR6 he raced at the 1964 International Six Day Trials in East Germany. Bud Ekins made the fence jump in The Great Escape, and the bike underneath him was a Triumph as well. The 2026 Bonneville T120 starts around $13,995 and keeps the same silhouette. You are not chasing a young man's bike here… you are buying the one you wanted at nineteen.

03 / Boots · Red Wing Iron Ranger 8111

Red Wing built this boot in the 1930s for men working the iron ranges of northern Minnesota. The double leather toe cap was protection, never decoration. Amber Harness leather sits around $350, and the sole gets rebuilt when you wear through it. Buy them once, and in twenty years they look better than the day they showed up.

P.S. Before you spend on a bottle labeled “male performance,” fix the free stuff first. L-citrulline has one small trial behind it in men with mild ED, and even that result came in below what prescription options do. Sleep, walking, and lifting cost nothing… start where the evidence is strongest.
