A man who plans properly should get to enjoy the result.
01 / Watch · Oris Big Crown Pointer Date
Oris has been in Hölstein since 1904 and the Big Crown goes back to a 1938 pilot's watch with an oversized crown you could turn wearing gloves. The fourth hand sweeping the date around the dial is the detail nobody else does properly. It is mechanical, Swiss and priced where an ordinary man can reach it without a conversation at home. Buy it on a leather strap and let it age.
02 / Fire · A Santa Maria grill
A grate on a crank that raises and lowers over live coals, out of the Californian ranch tradition, where the fire stays put and the food moves. You cook over oak, you control the heat with a handle, and you stand outside for two hours doing something with your hands. A man who has only ever used a gas grill has not really cooked outside. Build one if you can weld.
03 / Book · The Worst Journey in the World
Apsley Cherry-Garrard's 1922 account of Scott's expedition, written by a man who was there and who survived. The winter journey to collect emperor penguin eggs, in total darkness at minus 60, is the most harrowing hundred pages in English. It is also the honest counterweight to Amundsen's efficiency. Read it and then look at your week.
